Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhane Wallis confirmed for lead role in Annie remake

It looks like the ‘sun will come out tomorrow’ for youngster Quvenzhane Wallis as confirmation was made that the nine year old actress (who was enjoying her Oscar evening last night) would be starring in the role of Annie in the remake of the beloved musical.

Buzz Feed revealed the news on their website that the youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee of all time would be replacing Hollywood actor Will Smith’s daughter Willow as the lead character. Columbia Pictures president Hannah Minghella praised Wallis for her all-round talent at such a young age and was confident that she would excel in the role.

“Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star. She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.”

Wallis received her first Oscar nomination for her role as adventurous youngster Hushpuppy in the Oscar-nominated indie drama Beasts of the Southern Wild and was in attendance at last night’s ceremony though she lost out in the Best Actress category to Jennifer Lawrence’s performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

Willow Smith dropped out of starring as Annie because she wanted to enjoy her childhood. Her father Will and mother Jada Pinkett Smith are co-producers on the film along with musician Jay-Z.

Director Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) is currently working on the remake’s screenplay and is due to be released in late 2014.

It’s not such a hard-knock life for Wallis right now as her incredible journey continues and it is clear that people are ‘gonna know who she is’ by the time the film comes out.
