Civil War veteran Tom Hanks comes to the aid of an orphaned girl in News of the World trailer

For many film fanatics, 2020 has been a bit of a mixed year for legendary actor Tom Hanks.

Earlier this year, the multi-award winning star of Philadelphia (1993), Forrest Gump (1994) and Saving Private Ryan (1998) enjoyed a return to Oscar contention with his nominated role as Fred Rogers in the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Having then starred in the underwhelming war flick Greyhound, he was soon diagnosed with COVID-19 back in April.

Thankfully, the much-loved veteran is looking to end this year on a high as he reunites with his Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass for the upcoming western News of the World.

With a December / January release currently pending, the film’s official trailer has finally landed.

The film stars Hanks as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a Civil War veteran who agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. The pair travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home.

Newcomer Helena Zengel (Looping, System Crasher) portrays the young orphan Johanna with additional casting support coming from Elizabeth Marvel (True Grit, Homeland), Ray McKinnon (Deadwood, Sons of Anarchy) and Hanks’s former Turner & Hooch co-star Mare Winningham (Georgia, Philoman).

News of the World is currently scheduled for release in the UK on New Year’s Day 2021.
