Having successfully adapted some of their beloved animated films into live-action adaptations (Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book), Disney are hoping for another positive result with their new take on the fairytale Beauty and the Beast.
The “tale as old as time” is highly regarded as one of the all-time great animated films after it achieved strong success back in 1991. But now fans are about to be served with a lavish-looking adaptation that brings our favourite characters to life with the official trailer premiering online.
Directed by Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Mr Holmes), the story centres on an arrogant prince who is magically transformed into a monstrous Beast. When a young woman named Belle arrives at his castle seeking to rescue her father, the pair end up striking a close bond. To become a prince again, the Beast must win her love with a kiss or remain a monster forever.
Harry Potter actress Emma Watson leads the film as Belle with Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb) playing the prince / Beast.
The rest of the impressive ensemble includes Luke Evans (The Hobbit trilogy, Dracula Untold) as the villainous Gaston, Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge! Star Wars prequel trilogy) as candlestick Lumiere, Ian McKellen (Middle Earth saga, X-Men series) as clock Cogsworth, Emma Thompson (Harry Potter series, Saving Mr Banks) as teapot Mrs Potts, Josh Gad (Frozen, Pixels) as Gaston’s dopey sidekick Lefou, Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda, Dave) as Belle’s father Maurice and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Jupiter Ascending, Concussion) as feather duster Plumette.
This version will also have a mixture of songs from both the 1991 film and the Broadway adaptation which include “Belle”, “Be Our Guest”, “Gaston” and of course, “Beauty and the Beast”.
We will all become guests of this new take when it is released in cinemas on March 17th 2017.
