Himesh Patel uses Beatles songs to become a singing sensation in trailer for Danny Boyle’s Yesterday

For many music fans, it’s hard to imagine a world without the incredible songs of The Beatles….until now.

After achieving great success with the likes of Trainspotting (1996), Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and 127 Hours (2010), director Danny Boyle is back with a new feature film that could well turn out to be one of the surprise hits of 2019.

Entitled Yesterday, the musical comedy has unveiled a long but entertaining trailer which already promises plenty of laughs, singing and celebrity cameos.

The film centres on Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter in a small seaside town whose dreams of fame are beginning to falter. But after suffering a freak accident during a mysterious global blackout, he wakes up to discover that The Beatles don’t exist. He then decides to perform the band’s songs to a world that has never heard them which makes him become a global superstar.

Himesh Patel, who played Tamwar Masood in EastEnders between 2007 and 2016, tackles the lead role of Jack with support coming from Lily James (Cinderella, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again), Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters, The Spy Who Dumped Me), Joel Fry (Trollied, Game of Thrones) and Ana De Armas (Knock Knock, Blade Runner 2049). There are also celebrity cameos from the likes of renowned singer Ed Sheeran and chat show host James Corden.

The film also has the advantage of being penned by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Richard Curtis who also wrote hit comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and Love Actually (2003).

While it’s not a biopic, it’s safe to say that this flick is looking to capitalise on the recent success of the Queen film Bohemian Rhapsody as well as the upcoming Elton John fantasy Rocketman.

Love is all you need when Yesterday is released in the UK on 28th June.
