Over forty years ago, British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber helped adapt the story of Cats into a musical. Upon its release in the West End in 1981, the show received favourable reviews and eventually hit Broadway. It has since gone on to gross over $2 billion worldwide and is seen as one of the most beloved musicals ever to hit the stage.
The story is now making the transition to the big-screen via a live-action adaptation with Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The Damned United, The King’s Speech) stepping behind the camera. This is familiar territory for the British filmmaker who also took on the audacious job of helming the cinematic version of another classic West End musical in Les Miserables (2012).
More importantly, there is a very talented cast involved with the upcoming film which is hoping to create plenty of ‘purfect memories’ for its audiences later this year. However the newly-released trailer has already left plenty of people talking about the bizarre-looking visual effects which could make or break its chances of success….
The plot centres on a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.
Renowned pop artist Taylor Swift (Valentine’s Day, The Lorax) and Oscar-winning actress/singer Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls, Sing) tackle the key vocal roles of Bombalurina and Grizabella while the rest of the exceptional voice cast includes James Corden (Into the Woods, Peter Rabbit), Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect trilogy), singer Jason DeRulo, ballerina Francesca Hayward, Ray Winstone (Rango, Snow White and the Huntsman), Idris Elba (Luther, Thor trilogy), Sir Ian McKellen (Middle Earth Saga, X-Men series) and Dame Judi Dench (Skyfall, Philomena).
It will be interesting to see where Cats has us saying ‘me-OW’ or ‘me-WOW’ when it hits UK cinemas on 20 December.
