Lincoln, Les Miserables and Skyfall dominate BAFTA nominations

As enthusiastic film fans (including myself) await the Oscar nominations tomorrow afternoon, our own awards group have built up the anticipation by announcing their nominees for 2013.

The BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) have placed the historical drama Lincoln as their leading frontrunner with ten nods including Best Film, Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones) and Best Supporting Actress (Sally Field). Surprisingly though, director Steven Spielberg was snubbed from his own category.

Newly-released musical epic Les Miserables and fantasy adventure Life of Pi are joint second with nine mentions. Les Mis was nodded for Best Film (and Best British Film), Best Actor (Hugh Jackman) and Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway) though director Tom Hooper also missed out a nod like Spielberg did. Pi was nominated in the likes of Best Film and Best Director (Ang Lee).

James Bond-blockbuster Skyfall also did well with eight nominations including Best British Film, Best Supporting Actor (Javier Bardem), Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench) and a variety of technical nods.

Political-thriller Argo (with seven nominations including Best Director for Ben Affleck) and war-drama Zero Dark Thirty (with five nominations including Best Actress for Jessica Chastain) completed the Best Film line-up.

Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow (ZD30), Michael Haneke (Amour), Lee and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained) all compete with each for Best Director.

Les Mis and Skyfall are part of the Best British Film line-up which also features Anna Karenina, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Seven Psychopaths.

In the acting-categories, Day-Lewis is targeting a fourth win in Best Actor for his role in Lincoln and is up against Jackman, Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master) and shock nominee Ben Affleck (Argo).

Chastain is hoping to win Best Actress but is competing with Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone), Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) and Emmanuelle Riva (Amour).

In Supporting Actor, Bardem and Jones battle it out with Alan Arkin (Argo), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) and Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained) while Hathaway, Field and Dench square up in Best Supporting Actress against Amy Adams (The Master) and Helen Hunt (The Sessions).

The BAFTAs are once again hosted by Stephen Fry and will take place on Sunday, February 10th at London’s Royal Opera House.

Sadly your favourite Wirral film critic won’t be standing in the red carpet pens this year (unless anyone wants to take me of course!) which is disappointing though getting the opportunity to go in 2012 was a wonderful experience that I won’t forget. Instead I shall be cheering on my hopeful winners (mainly Jessica Chastain!) from my comfort of my own home!

One day more now until the Oscar nominations arrive!
