SAG Award winners: Further recognition for American Hustle and Breaking Bad

An air of predictability is starting to happen again with this year’s awards season….

Last night, the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) followed up the recent results of others ceremonies like the Golden Globes and Critic Choice Awards by awarding the same group of individuals with further accolades.

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both kept up their excellent form by winning Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor respectfully for their roles in the biopic drama Dallas Buyers Club. The former is now looking the likely frontrunner to win his category despite original consensus being on Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years).

Cate Blanchett stormed her way to another Best Actress win for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine while African star Lupita Nyong’o clinched the Best Supporting Actress gong for her performance in 12 Years a Slave ahead of predicted favourite Jennifer Lawrence.

However it was Lawrence who would have the last laugh as her crime-caper film American Hustle won the Best Ensemble cast award, a key indictator for potential Oscar glory. It beat off stern compeition from 12 Years as well as August: Osage County, The Butler and Dallas Buyers Club.

The Best Stunt Ensemble award was won by war-thriller Lone Survivor which overcame the likes of All is Lost and Rush.

However co-star Anna Gunn missed out on the Best Drama Actress award which surprisingly went to British veteran Maggie Smith for ITV’s Downton Abbey.

Another Brit (and Dame) to celebrate victory was Helen Mirren as she beat off competition from the likes of Helena Bonham Carter and Elisabeth Moss to clinch Best TV Movie Actress for her role in Phil Spector.

Michael Douglas won the Male category ahead of co-star Matt Damon for his turn as Liberace in the biopic drama Behind the Candelabra, which followed on from his Golden Globe win a week earlier.

Modern Family also celebrated double success with two wins for Best Comedy Ensemble and an inspired Best Comedy Actor win for Ty Burrell as dopey dad Phil Dunphy.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus added another award to her cabinet as she was named Best Comedy Actress for her role as Selina Kyle in the political satire Veep.

Despite an incredible third series, Game of Thrones had to settle for the one accolade as it was named Best Stunt Ensemble.
