Almost fifty years ago, Richard Roundtree and his memorable character John Shaft strolled onto our screens whilst backed by Isaac Hayes’s funky score in the hit blaxploitation flick Shaft (1971).
Years later, Samuel L. Jackson attempted to replicate the film’s success with a 2000 reboot which failed to impress. Now, Roundtree and Jackson are back for a new outing for their characters alongside a third member of their family in the upcoming Shaft reboot which has the amazing title of….Shaft.
Directed by Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Ride Along), the plot sees Jackson’s John Shaft II having to help his son John Shaft Jr. investigate the mysterious death of his best friend in the Harlem underworld. The pair soon find themselves gaining extra support from the senior Shaft of the family in order to overcome their adversaries.
Jessie Usher (Independence Day: Resurgence, Survivor’s Remorse) plays the youngest member of the Shaft trio with additional cast members including Regina Hall (Scary Movie series, Girls Trip), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse, Love, Simon) and Luna Lauren Velez (Oz, Dexter).
The new Shaft film will be released in the UK on 14th June.
