Film fans will find it hard to believe that it’s been over thirty years since the hit action flick Top Gun (1986) took our breath away. Yes, I have just quoted that Oscar-winning track from Berlin….
After all this time, a sequel is finally on its way next year with leading man Tom Cruise heading back into the danger zone as heroic fighter pilot Maverick.
Entitled Top Gun: Maverick, the film’s official trailer landed at SDCC last night and sees Cruise comfortably settling back into one of his most iconic roles.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy, Oblivion), the plot sees Maverick now a flight instructor at the Top Gun school as he ends up mentoring the son of his old friend Goose (who died in the original film).
Miles Teller (Whiplash, War Dogs) plays Bradley Bradshaw with the other big additions to the cast including Oscar-winner Jennifer Connolly (Labyrinth, A Beautiful Mind), Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Baby Driver), Glen Powell (Everybody Wants Some!, Hidden Figures) and Ed Harris (Apollo 13, Westworld).
Along with Cruise, fellow Top Gun veteran Val Kilmer reprises his role as Iceman though there are no appearances at all for Kelly McGillis (Charlie) or Tim Robbins (Merlin).
Top Gun: Maverick takes flight when it is released in the UK on 17 July 2020.
